Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

The forum server inserted a space in the URL. John should have used the URL link button thus:
http://olimex.wordpress.com/2013/12/11/do-you-have-enough-pr ogram-memory-for-your-next-pic-project/

Thanks for the link John, the Olimex produce looks good. It is a minimalist board carrying just what you need to get the PIC32MZ going. Rather like a UBW32 for the PIC32MZ.

There is a rouge space character in 'program', compliment of the forum software

I tried to post with various methods but no go.
Copy and paste to your browser then edit to remove the space.

Perhaps you could base your new beast on this board, Geoff?
Most of the work already done for you, in terms of the PCB design, that is...

Yes, I thought the same thing. The problem is that Microchip will probably not be able to supply production quantities of the chip until March, so the Olimex board will be delayed until at least then.

Sorry but I use quite a few forums and this is the only one that fouls up a URL.

March will come soon enough I suppose but Microchip are V-e-r-y S-l-o-w to catch up with other silicon chip makers and further delay is an own goal.

It's a good job (for Microchip) that AllWinner don't provide anything like as good documentation.

If ST released a 250MHz STM32 chip during the delay then Microchip would be playing catch up again - and before even getting chips out the door!!

I sincerely hope Microchip have sent Serge (retrobsd), Geoff and especially Olimex several of the current flawed chips to do dev work with. Otherwise key people & organisations can't overlap initial dev work with Microchip's ramp up.

Hokey pokey, but having said that, consider the following:

- Olimex boards: Delayed until Microchip produce chips in March 2014.
- Geoff's own design: Delayed until Microchip produce chips in March 2014.

Isn't it the same thing at the end of the day?

I am probably missing something here...

Or (choose one):

1. give early chips to Geoff & Olimex now, they do dev work, then in March can ship boards within a week or so

2. wait until March, give chips to ..., dev work starts, boards ship maybe June or September?

If Microchip have already handed chips out they should be saying so because people want to know what is happening otherwise some designs will go to ST or AW or TI or ... (just for lack of publicity).

I maybe missed the publicity. Did I?

There are some sample chips out, but not many.

I have a rev A2 PIC32MZ and apparently Microchip is up to rev A3 by now. But they have recently told a client of mine (a big multinational) that they will not be able to supply them with more samples until rev A4 (in March).

This is a complex chip and because of that we should expect delays. Just 20 years ago Tandem using the same CPU design was selling minicomputers worth millions of dollars to banks and large corporations. The PIC32MZ has an advanced version of that same CPU and sells for $12.

Even after the first chips arrive there will be a delay in manufacturing the boards and then to develop the firmware to suit the board+chip. Finally, because I would want to publish the design via Silicon Chip there will be a publishing delay. So the finished board+software is possibly six months away.

Oh sure, it makes sense for you to publish there.

It can't be THAT complex a chip. Look at the AllWinner ones. They do a ton of things and are 1GHz and above. Also dual-core and quad-core.

The Olimex A10 LIME board is quite a thing especially at the price.

Probably best not to mention the Raspberry Pi too much as it's "only" 700MHz.

It's like Microchip's been asleep. I really do wonder what they'd do about a 300MHz or even just 250MHz STM32.

I'm glad to hear you have something to work with. Microchip need headlines to get buy-in.

Microchip makes mainly chips for the embedded market, not for all purpose machines or mobile phones. Its also in a lot of appliances. There the market is huge.
It is also the reason why Microchip has a lot of choices. Sometimes you need only a few pins, and they have that available.

As such you can not compare Microchip with companies that focus on tablets, mobiles, etc

ST make such chips, too. As do many others.

It's completely up to Microchip what they do but this isn't helping them.
