Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

DIY is mainly for DIYers.

DIY zone opened my horizons. helped me to learn a lot of new things and to gain new friends. It helps people with very low budget and can generate future objectives/targets for many. It helps skilled people to gain some money locally. But that is all, regarding to business.

If you want your own business, you can't open it. There are already thieves for closed source projects.

DIY is mainly for DIYers.

BTW, how much gained Adrian Bowyer, the inventor of the RepRap printing head, from Makerbot business? How much gained Fernando Baragan from Arduino business? And so on... (On a mean note, the thief can be your friend, your teacher, etc.)

P.S. In this area, the (constant?) gain is only at the parts, components, materials and consumables distributors.

With all the sub $15 Arduino modules from China and the recent design changes with 1.0 and DUE, how long before one of the Arduino variants goes closed source?

As a DIYer, I don't care. There will be always the older designs and wiring.org.co. I learned already enough for my own benefit and can any time continue an open project or start a similar one.

As for China, is not enough to offer lower prices. It needs reliability, quality, etc. You can be tricked only once. Believe me or not, the poor people looks for quality and durability as they can not afford to trow with money. Bad and cheap China products are for people with money .

I watched the second one from Chris Anderson of Wired magazine and Bre Pettis of MakerBot.
I enjoyed that video but it's more about their maker history.
Chris talks up the maker movement and then announces his new book titled "Maker". He claims the maker movement is the new technical revolution and kickstarter type sites are funding it.

If you wanted to know Bre's history and the history of Makerbot then its worth watching.
They really don't talk much about the new makerbot or the movement away from open source at all.

Greetings all,

Its a while since I've been here but I've been busy with yet another Open Source wind turbine controller :)

Why Open Source? My experience of coding for GPL projects goes back nearly 20 years. To start with it was because that is what everyone else was doing. These days its using it as a leg up on my own projects.

Example...

I was looking for an implementation of a low speed (about 1200bps) modem on an 8 bit AVR processor to allow me to connect remote sensors onto my irrigation controller. I discovered the BeRTOS project (which has one), downloaded the code and started playing with it. It almost scratched my itch but I found a couple of things were not quite the way I wanted but at least 90% of it was there. In other words it gave me a leg up!!

So I hacked the code to do things the way I wanted and once I'd got interested in it developed a few more features. It just happens that these features were just right for the next iteration of my wind turbine controller. This time moving from an Atmel Butterfly demo board as seen here to an Arduino Mega 2560. The license of the original code was GPL so I had to license mine the same way if I was going to share it - hopefully someone else will benefit from the changes I made and give them a leg up.

In fact you'll find details about this Mk3 controller here.

Just one more PCB to verify before the whole project gets published.
