Just a link to a work in progress project I was working on.

Uses 3, 8x8 led matrix's with 3 Austria Microsystems AS1107 chips. [Dip]

Modified Geoff's spi routine (8 bit) to a 16 bit routine, with Geoff's permission.
Hopefully updated into V3.2 (please Geoff). Also works by sending two 8 bit commands each time(per column). Scrolling delay is 51ms.... 1 ms is a blur.....

Keep plugging away, it is fun learning
But can be expensive (if you keep blowing things up).

Nice Wombat.

Are they expensive, the matrix and chip?

8x8 Matrix was $1.80 each from Futurlec.com.au

AS1107 was listed as 2.95 USD each from Austria. Actually I got them as a free sample, as the project was something for my workplace...for evaluation.

They come in DIP-24 or SOIC-24(15.4mmx10.3mm) packages..SPI interface

Originally I wanted to use the AS1116 (similar design) listed at $2.99 US

which come in a QSOP-24(8.6mmx6mm) and TQFN(4x4)-24 (4mmx4mm) packages. SPI and I2C interfaces(AS1115)

I received 3 chips of each for free(sample) FEDEX'ed from Austria to our Company's door in under a week. Very good service. Packages when ordered were TQFN, then QSOP, then DIP. I can't solder surface mount for Sh!t..
