Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Got a message to say OneDrive was deleting a lot of files and I could restore them from the recycle bin. Checked one drive and it had processed 11000+ files but there was nothing in the recycle bin. I don't know what to do next.

The recycle bin that One Drive is referring to is probably the one in the cloud (ie, within One Drive).

I have found that renaming or moving a directory tree can cause this message.  One Drive seems to implement a rename as a bulk copy of the directory tree followed be a bulk delete of the old tree.

BTW, I have found One Drive to be the perfect off site backup.  My Synology NAS watches for any file created or modified and immediately copies it up to One Drive - so the backup is instantaneous.  1TB of One Derive storage costs about A$120 per year with the full Microsoft Office thrown in for free.

I was looking in the One Drive recycle bin. All my passwords seem to be gone. When I try to log in to an app. it no longer auto fills in password.

If you are using Chrome the "remembered" passwords were probably supplied by Google.  So, no connection with Microsoft.  However, if you are using Edge, Microsoft may have been doing the remembering and subsequently lost them.

As another thought, you may have a virus or something messing with your computer.

The virus angle is what Im worried about, I have no anti virus software only Windows Defender and the free version of Malware bytes.

never use Windows without a really good antivirus that includes a firewall.

I personally use Eset home Smart Security and have been doing it for years.

Yes it costs but I've never had any problems with a virus or malware like I did when using the free ones before I started using it

Others will have their favorite ones

As regards passwords I use Lastpass, I only ever need to remember the login for that, it keeps all my passwords and will if I want it to, insert the correct password on any site I've given it the password for.

IF you do decide to use a password manager similar to Lastpass I HIGHLY recommend using a phrase instead of one word or collection of letters as it's master password>
That way hacking your master password will be almost impossible

I agree, as long as you don't go to hacker sites and make regular backups. Antivirus software (e.g.: performance) and its manufacturers behave IMO in a similar way to viruses  a.I, or rather friends of mine, have had bad experiences with M$Afee (subscription trap). When in doubt, always use VirusTotal.

Hi Michael,

To get a 2nd opinion I use Trend Micro Housecall .
Since we have also used Trend Micro products professionally, this software has my least distrust.

Cheers

@Martin
Thanks, it's always good to have a second option.

It all was OK, just OneDrive having a cleanup deleting old files. It deleted files from Thunderbird Mail that I haven't used for ages, I now use Better Bird. Also some files from a Chat app the family uses. Why so many I don't know.
