Fantastic result for minds that though it out and hands that made it happen. However I feel bit sad, that so much effort, money and time are wasted on unnecessary things (like wars) that do not move humanity forward, to say the least. George |

True, but this is positive science, sits way above all the politics. What a achievement, lets hope it goes well, you can feel the excitement, the tension in that control room. It is a fantastic achievement and top marks to all those that made it possible, but I do feel it is a diversion from the reality of what is happening on the earth and one must ask if the money could have been spent to help the less fortunate of humanity. The knowledge that will come from this event, if it goes as planned may help the understanding of the solar system and the origins of the earth but is there a simpler explanation that science is ignoring? I suppose we all salute the achievement but await a usable result of the knowledge gained. Half elated half skeptic I think. A bit like the modern version of the wright brothers achievement withe the heaver than air flight a century ago and look where that has led, some good some bad, depending on political wim and requirements of the time. I remember the same sort of comment at a NASA conference about the cost of the Curiosity rover, 2.5 billion dollars I think. Why send so much money out into space? The reply was something along the lines of We dont send the money into space, its spent here on earth, in science and development. Manufacturers are paid, families are fed, and science and engineering takes some big leaps forward. Plus these sort of ventures inspire young and old to learn, to take up a career in science. A remarkable achievement, to manage to hit a comet travelling through space. Even better to land the Philae lander on it and get data back, despite numerous failures (thruster, harpoons etc). Yes there is plenty of negative comments about such great achievements, but not from this vegemite, I was glued to the monitor same as when Armstrong touched down last century, but than glued to the radio. Blimey getting old! Exciting stuff, just incredible that tension in the control room you could feel it watching the video. Magic! Any of you fellows seen Interstellar yet? No, no you were spot on it is sad, we can accomplish so much but are tied down by politics and negativity. Sum it up from my viewpoint "How can we soar like eagles when we are surrounded by turkeys?" But Philae has shown us we can, I have noticed the ESA with this massive project have not achieved the acknowledgement they deserve. Perhaps there are more turkeys around now compared to when Armstrong walked on the moon.  We come from the land downunder. Vic |

I read this morning that it touched down, failed to anchor, bounced back (up) about 1km and landed in a different spot but on its side. This has blocked the sun from the solar panels and the batteries have died. There is hope that as the comet rotates then the panels may again see the sun with some hope to recover the mission. I can't recall exactly where I read this. |

Luckily I am able to recharge my batteries, but I suffer similar problems. Batteries don't last that long. Would be nice to have one re-charge last a year or so. George |
