Hi Guys, Thru life everyone goes thru it and when everything seems to be going well the govt decides to wreck it for you. I was repairing industrial gearbox's and became the one to talk to when there was a problem. Oneday a cop came around and took me in for a 6 year old dui charge and that changed my life. I had no choice to quit that job after what was said ( that they would pay big bucks to get a gearbox fitter) so that life ended quit smart with me waiting for pubic transport for the first time in decades. Well onto the dole for the first time and got a mortgage relief. Finally got a job at a food producing place where I broke my finger in 3 places and now have a titanium plate in. After that when I went back to work well the job ended so back on the dole. Got a job at a flour mill where I made a new platform 16x8x3.5 metres to make the process so much easier for the workers. Well that turned out a cheap option for the company so I was told after I finished with them. Well after that another stint on the dole then off a local shop ad started resurfacing bathrooms and kitchens. Did that for over 12 months with little return and found how much I had forgotten the farm and the place was overrun with weeds(85 acres here). Repaired a gearbox for a bloke, cost me $1,200 in parts and he gave a promise to pay... never saw him again. So now it is cooling down in SA, firewood will be a side income and yes I did sign up for the dole again also DOME (Don't Overlook Mature Employee's) where I did find my resume was so out dated as resumes are so dumbed downed so NON tradesmen can get jobs that true tradesmen used to have. Also all the tickets I used to have like forklift, combined space with BA etc have all by the govts call expired. So with over 30 years experience means nothing in todays standards. Hi Bryan It sounds like you have a string of outs, If it was raining film stars I think you would get hit by Helen Degenerate. One of our eminent Politicians once said that life wasn't meant to be easy, and then he went on to make his words true. The only tickets that are any use is the tickets politicians have on themselves as they never expire. You will get back on deck as when you are down and out the only way is up. Lucky the dole and Mortgage relief is available otherwise we would be like other countries and have to find a big cardboard box to live in. I was inspired by your many goes at doing different trades, so that alone will hold you head high in most jobs you want to have a try at . Life is full of ups and downs. If it wasn't for the downs, there would be no ups. Most of us go through dark times, we just need to push though them, but its never easy. Stay away from the amber fluid, seriously. It might cheer you up for a short time, but over a long time it just makes things worse, and keeps you broke. Remember how one too many beers and a DUI many years ago started this cycle. Hope things turn around. They will. Bryan, Sorry to read all that. Chin up! I believe as Christians we believe in a punishing Abrahamic God, like the Jews and Muslims and believe we get punished because we sinned. Forget that. I am not a Buddhist but believe life is a struggle and means suffering. In 1995 the whole WA public service was restructured and anyone over 55 was offered redundancy or sent to another far away college. Many fought back, claimed workers comp or used up their sick leave. Bus drivers were kept in depots and had to play cards and the hope was they get sick of doing nothing and resign without any benefit! One of my TAFE colleagues with a doctorate was asked to clean out the storeroom by the HR chief with a witness present, the hope was he refused the order so they can sack him! He cleverly obliged and kept fighting. I managed to get a job at another TAFE college and kept on fighting. From my own low times, I think the worst was the feeling of not being useful and relevant. It was as though my use by date had expired so I shall tell my tale. Along with my refrig business Norcold, I also had a school bus run for 20 years, you could count the days I was late on the left hand fingers of a right handed butcher. Then in 1998 the QLD Govt came out with Driver Accreditation requiring a Medical. Being totally blind in one eye, I could not pass that medical. A meeting with my local poly lead to a decision to allow me to continue driving providing I sought a buyer. I carried up to 96 children without a single accident for those 20 years, my conveyance committee (parents) were well aware of my one eyedness. Make a good umpire 
Fortunately I found a buyer straight away, but driving the bus for the period until the takeover, I`d completely lost my confidence. I packed up once selling bus closed Norcold and travelled OZ prospecting for gold for two years. Missus, I, two dogs and solar Troppie. We had a ball. Hi Guy's, Thanks for the encouraging replies and today I got off my ass and started to fabricate the wood saw I designed last year which came to a sudden halt. I'm going to wait until the rotten govt here is thrown out then see if I can get a second title on the farm so I can sub divide the rear of the property. I'll only go ahead with it if we can become mortgage free and it will have a spring fed 1 megalitre dam which is the only water around for miles that has water year round so hopefully it will bring a good price. If the govt says I can't sub divide I have already talked with Nick and they will look to go into bat for us. I will give a good donation to them if this all goes ahead too. It did take me a lot of courage just to make thread and several times in the past I have written similar and not gone ahead with it. If it wasn't for my wife and 2 lovely daughters I would be on a oneway trip back to the UK with my uncle who I first met at my Mum's funeral. He did ask me if I would like to go with him and get out of the ratrace that Australia has become. Next week the girls are off for a family renunion so I'm going to redo the bathroom and aim for a 8x5 trailer load of firewood everyday. I walked around the farm before xmas and reckon I would have close to 100 ton of seasoned wood and with a mate who will put a shop front in Kanmantoo where the wood will be sold it can become a good side income. The woman I saw last week that have redone my resume and are giving me all the help they can have given me hope I can get back in paid employment. As my Mum used to say Bryan you have a high IQ so where you think times will be tough just look inside yourself and things will look clearer. Depression is a hidden thing that men try hard to bring out in the open but can't breach the gap to do it. Regards Bryan P.S. Glenn I did know know you would edit my original post but the damage done by the comments made I do feel has made members weary of buying batteries off me. I can get a solid supply of them so if members do want them I only make a 10% margin on them for handling and shipping and the ones I get are all in good condition and have gone thru a series of load tests before I get them. That 1000AH 24 Volt bank I have here is too big as I don't have the charging array so that bank is open to offers with the warning it weights 700kg. I recently got another 24 volt 600AH bank that is great on our array and will keep charge with only one genset run a week to get the batteries to float. |

Bryan's wife here, and my view. Bryan is enormously capable at a wide range of tasks, things mechanical or things electronic or both, even pretty good at building structures with concrete and wood. Amazing at designing and thinking outside the box. The original DUI I do not want to speak of, I was a week away from having his first daughter and begged him not to go get more beer. He did. I haven't divorced him for that or for the eventual consequences, it was just a one day bad decision. I have made a few of those myself, we move on. He is depressed now, it gets harder to find work as one grows older. I am trying too, and been working to gain qualifications for a comfy old lady job bookkeeping. I hate the paperwork stuff, but I can do it and it pays. He needs to keep chin up, try to achieve a little bit each day, we are blessed with 85 acres of space and freedom. The girls are beautiful, intelligent and loving, and we need to give them the best childhood we possibly can. We are strong people, we are both a bit down with the bastards at the moment, but we will make it somewhere better. |

Hi Bryan Nice to see you have the support of a good sidekick in the wife, we all have our problems but you are working through yours, so never give up. Fire wood is good money but hard work and makes you very tired but when that tired you tend to forget some of the problems, so that is positive. With your acreage and a good water supply you should look at planting passionfruit they grow like crazy and have a good retail price if you are near to a large population center. Your comment of " my original post but the damage done by the comments made I do feel has made members weary of buying batteries off me." i take it as this directed to my comment i made, it was no way intended to discredit your battery supply, and i had only questioned the life of secondhand batteries. Should you not be such a negative person towards myself, and i had understood your current situation, then i could have perhaps thrown you a bone to work on, as 2 weeks ago a lady from Mt Barker phoned me wanting to know if i would do installs in the hills area, i declined the offer due to travel and other work commitments. I could have perhaps help train you and punted a couple of days work a week your way, although everyone wants experienced installers, but knowing who to ask when you get stuck is half the battle of completing the job to a good standard. The funny part is Bryan you have a problem with myself, and i have no problem with yourself, yes there is is the issue of what you tried to do to me on a different forum, but that is all forgotten and forgiven, so lets move on. As for firewood, whats your price per ton, and how far will you travel to deliver, because i deal with people daily, and some have fire places, its no problem to me to ask about where they get their wood from, or suggest they give you a call. Indeed. I actually have that issue myself. Long-term, I hate drinking, but I love beer - hows that for a contradiction. I am actively working to stop it, as you are so right in the statement that: "It might cheer you up for a short time, but over a long time it just makes things worse, and keeps you broke." It certainly does - in both ways you mention. I'd hate to think what I spend in a year on beer..... .....mmmmmmmmmm - beeeeer......(homer simpson) And before you know it, you find yourself drinkin' more of it(cos you can, cos you have developed a tolerance for it), spending more on it, and getting fatter because of it.(that's what I have noticed about myself, anyway) I will be honest - it is REALLY hard to stop, when I have been drinkin' for about 20 years. Even though I never really got into spirits in a serious way(thank God!), just beer is proving difficult to give up. The first few days are the worst - if I can get through them, then it must get easier, as I will not want to spoil my dry days by drinking again. So, yes - as Glenn says - keep away from it, cos it won't really help - I can vouch for that.

The missus and kids are off to KI for a week of renonuion so I'm going to be home alone so things are going to happen here and with the FIL going to drop off the perch soon life might be golden without a mortgage. As far as going off the drop when one is down one used to have grass that soothed everything and more is one the way. funny how I don't pay for these things but I do feel my life as a leathersmith is back on the cards as I do have a good resource of leather and sewing machines here. I had a talk with my neighbor and if I come up with 25K I can get a title and he is interested but the 400K has him troubled. I did say time has moved on and it is the best place for his sheep so pay it either way. Pete rang me and we talked for ages and why I did saw him as a bad guy what he offered was decent ans thank you for asking. Well that 1000AH is sold for a grand and I will put up more as I get them that way more people will join this great forum and learn what is here like the micro-mite. Cheers Bryan |

Good luck with everything! And I don't know why grass gets such a bad rap - look at that synthetic cannabis people are buying. Not sure if you have that or if it is legal in Aussie, but over here it is ten times worse then the real thing, if you ask me. Makes people go psychotic and there have been more then one or two stories in the paper about how insane people on it become. You simply don't get that with the other "Illegal" one, yet it is the one which is outlawed - go figure.... However, I might be getting into something that Glenn does not want on his forum, so.... Hi Bryan, Sorry to hear about your rough times. Do you have any markets around your way? You might be able to use your CNC mill to make some carved wood pieces to sell. Scrap wood, old pallets or fallen timber might help keep your costs down. There is a guy who frequents the local markets round me that sells wood toys, puzzles and other stuff for kids. He seems to do reasonably well at it - grand parents in particular seem to love buying that sort of thing. |

Hi Powerednut, Yea when I get time I intend to make some stuff on the CNC and at the moment I'm on making a woodsaw as in the next couple of weeks me and my mate will be cutting firewood full bore and setting up shop selling it. Also my mate is a blacksmith so this winter he is going to teach me everything about blacksmithing and also we'll be melting down copper etc to make some casting for the SCA crowd.(the mob that dressup in medieval clothing). Also the guy who in time I'll be getting the listeroid diesel is getting onto all his clients to see if they want batteries. Each day I'm getting my shed cleaned up and soon I'll start back making leather products. Regards Bryan |

Note to Glenn, Well I just spent over half an hour writing a post only to see it timeout and a new reply window turnup so I wonder if this forum has a 30 minute time out for a reply. ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------- Well Guy's, Life has taken another turn where I'm heading back to the gong to pickup the car Mum left me, it's a Hyundai Getz 2006 model that she bought new when the split with Dad happened. I'm also getting the clock my Dad left Mum which is a 1800's Vienna Wall Clock that cost Dad 15K back in the 80's. I'm flying over next Thursday and coming home after the weekend so I can spend time with my sisters kids and driving home via the coast to Vic where I stay at a cousins place where I met met the guy at at my Mum's funeral. So time doesn't matter and if other members live in the way I can call in and say G'Day as I'd hate to think I drove past and didn't say allo. Life is getting better but there is a chance I may spend the rest of my life in the UK. Regards Bryan |
