This is a very simple anometer built by my son with a little bit of help from dad. And Surprisingly it is reading very acuratly.

It is built using a bike speedo and the hub of an old front bike wheel. The cups on the rotor are made from plastic balls that split in half and are filled up with decorations and hung on Xmas trees bought from the craft shop for $2 each.

Calabration was done by entering different wheel sizes into the speedo and also by ajusting the diameter of the rotor.

It was calabrated out of the car window and reads acuratly up to 50 km/h at higher speeds than that it was getting a bit hard to hold onto.

Nice post Dean. Good idea using the bike hub, and the cups are a good size too. One of the best anometers I built used aluminium post end caps as cups. It was a little heavier than plastic cups, but performed well.

Good to see an old Commodore in such good condition too, they are getting rare these days.

One trick I picked up regarding vehicle testing. If its not a perfectly calm day, test drive in both directions, and calibrate to the difference in readings, the mid point.

Hi Glenn
We tested it in both directions on a very calm day with it reading the same in both directions.
The commodore is mine but unfortunatly the wife loves it and i get to drive her ford most of the time. Its a V8 253 SLE with factory fitted cruise controle and 4 wheel disk brakes pretty cool for a car 25 years old. it still has all the original running gear and the motor still dosnt need to be topped up between changes.
It is a bit thirsty but it is the car of choice when we go on a long trip.

All the best

Hi Dean

Yeah I though it looked like the V8, I noticed the heavy duty tow bar and twin exhaust. I had a 253 once in a HQ, nice motor.

Dont forget to write down the wheel size you used on the bike speedo. When the battery goes flat you'll have to re-enter the calibration.
