OK, nothing to do with windmills, but interresting just the same. We were stress relieving a boom today at work. A vibrator ( motor with out of ballance flywheel ) is attached to the boom and run at various speeds. The motor itself only draws 2 amps, but the vibration is felt over 200 meters away. The whole workshop rattles, coffee cups start sliding across tables, good fun. But after an hour you start to feel a little ill. Relieving stress... The boom is from a large excavator used in the open cut mines. They come in for repairs, and after the welding work is done we stress relieve to "settle" any welds. It also opens any cracks in weak points, which need more work before the job is finished. Its all part of the QA ( Quality Assurance ) requirements. Same with pre heating, all areas to be welded are preheated to anywhere between 150 to 300 degrees C before welding is started. Now preheating a bucket that weighs over 50 tones takes a little gas! Same with cool down, all controlled. The Boiler Makers know their stuff, which is why they are paid so much. Sheesh Glenn to stress relieve that the old way would be put it in an oven and soak it to about 800C then turnoff the oven and let it cool gradually. So how did you guy's stress relieve the rig I'd be very interested in knowing the modern methods Cheers Bryan |

Hi Bryan Yeah an oven is still the best method. Vibrating works most of the time, and is cheaper. The boom above is slightly out of spec, the two pivot points you see closest are too close, so they jacked them apart and welded a beam to brace them apart while it was relieved.
