I have played around with a pedal generator and learned a few points among them the need to avoid friction as much as possible, to avoid gearing stages and to recognise that pedal power is not smooth. So I came up with this concept:- 
The generator consists of a wooden disc wheel, heavy MDF, or some such. This large diameter wheel provides an effective flywheel which is really necessary for a pedal machine. The generator consists of a few coils, four might be enough, arranged in pairs either side of the disk and connected together via a soft iron 'saddle' (i.e. 'U' shape) pole pieces. The magnets are mounted in holes in the wheel and pass between the coils. Now the interesting bit is that magnets are not uniformly placed around the wheel but instead are grouped so that maximum generator effect occurs at the two points in the cycle where pedal pressure is highest and none, or very few, when the pedals are at top and bottom. |

I finally put together a F&P exercise bike. It's on my project page here. It's a bit rough, but I wanted to get it going and my wood prototype is working better than ever :) To control the load I used a basic adjustable FET to limit the charging current to warm up and slow down on. I really wanted to adjust the SMPS duty cycle but the old laptop power supply is fully potted (sealed) so you can't get in to do any mods. Hi Bj, I like the gold paint. This will protect the plastic quite well, but I think the ferrite magnets won't rust. I had some on an algae scraper in a salt water fish tank. I never saw rusting in over 10years. Neo is a different story though. Gordon. become more energy aware |

Well there you go - you learn something new everyday. I suppose you guys would know this from having your F&P mills out in the elements all year round :) I did find a lot of iron filings rusting in the magnets, so after cleaning them up they did look quite rust free... Bj, I've have not been able to see your site for quite a few months now. I'm on an Internode DSL account. Is your site up? I've been thinking you took it offline or moved it. I'm with Amnet in Perth, and you should be able to reach it unless your ISPs DNS tables aren't updated or they buy their internet from somewhere in india or not here! Damn this interweb thing, one minute it works, the next it doesn't ever again! I've had 100% uptime for nearly 2 years in a row so check with your ISP as it could be blocked for some unknown reason.
