Hi Guys. Got a suspect gas reg, but want to check before I go out and buy a new one. 
This feeds a gas hot water system and a stove. Last night I was filling the kitchen sink with hot water when it when cold after about 30 seconds. I then tried the stove and it would barely keep a flame. Poked my head out the window and I could hear the gas hot water system flame on and off every few seconds. Turned it off, and tried the stove. It would be OK with one burner, but 2 burners would struggle to stay lit, the flames going up and down every few seconds. Thinking I was out of gas, I turned off the tank and unscrewed the fitting. Tank still half full. Gas was coming out of the fitting, from the regulator, not the bottle! So gas was leaking back past the regulator. I'm guessing this is wrong. Sounds like there is something stuck on the regulators seat. Cant get hold of the plumber who fitted it a few months ago, no surprise there! Any idea's. G'day Glenn, Welcome to the modern world where regulators only last a year or so, here on the farm we have gone thru 4 of those dual switching ones, one gas fridge, one hot water service and it's all due to the dirty gas that comes in the house bottles. They put in this sticky stuff so it can produce a smell if a leak occurs but the problem is the sticky stuff goes thru EVERYTHING. Recently we had the same problem with our hot water system and when it started it went off with a bang, I had a mate standing by it to observe and when it went he reckoned he nearly did a No.2. Luckily he brought around an old single reg and to date that one is still working nicely. Cheers Bryan |

Thanks Bryan The local caravan fella stocks a dual stage reg for $40, so I'll go for a drive later to grab one. Main concern is the hot water. Last night I switched over to the solar hot water so I could have a shower, but this time of year suns low in the sky and the system struggles to get the tank over 45c. I did a bit of googling, there is bugger all to those regulators, very simple inside. I disconnected mine and I could see the mechanism inside looking up the outlet port. Tapped it on the bench a few times and some crap fell out, bits of hardened gasket goo. I could blow through it inlet to outlet. Blowing in the outlet would pass air, till I increased the pressure and it sealed, as expected, and the over pressure port kicked in and vented. Connected it back up and it seams to be working OK. Will give it a try out tonight. Might buy a spare one anyway, I'm lucky this weekend the sun is out so I have some how water in the tank, but if its overcast and cold, I need my hot shower!
