Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Wow, the last version is very sexy! I saw the other two before and I had an eye on it's youtube channel. Worth making for rapid prototyping - I have a couple of boards made with only a marker and one of them is an USB-to-Serial converter in use. Having a little device drawing straight lines for me is a little bless and looks awesome on the bench so I'm considering making one (with whatever junk parts).

Brilliant

The firmware is in Wiring language as it uses an Arduino for breadboard.Edited by vasi 2014-04-23

A Nice looking unit. I wonder how you would go trying to source appropriate pens that could handle inter IC pin traces. It would be even better if it could also drill the holes. That would take more than just a servo on the z axis.

I don't think that is possible without some professional tracers and a special ink but the hardware is up to that resolution...
As for drill, you need another frame design, with belts or threads. Then is not a plotter any more. If you take a look at the firmware, it have support for the third stepper and also support for the laser, coolant...

Yea I have been thinking about making a small cnc using some of the junk I've collected off laser printers etc over the years and I do have a heap of stepper driver chips here so I reckon it would be a great project for the umite and with this long weekend coming I will have some shed time to get going on this. Once I get it underway I'll make a new thread for it showing just how easy it will be to make a small one using junk parts.

Cheers Bryan

EDIT: O'well that little CNC is getting put on the backburner as I'm scoring an old Hercus CNC lathe, just need to get the FIL's trailer home so I can go pick it up then some serious reverse enginearing to do to see if I can get it going....Edited by Bryan1 2014-04-25

As author said today:
Board and 3D print stl files are now also in the repository on github. Updated firmware files will follow in a few days.
As I was curious to see if the firmware can handle angled lines, I modified the author's PCB and asked him to make a new demo video. He was very kind to grant my request:

The Eagle .pcb file can be downloaded from here. Is nothing special, I've just cut some 90 degree corners from the original file in the hope that I will see a firmware demo. I was surprised how fast Dirk responded with the video - I didn't expected to get such an answer.

The firmware can be ported to Pinguino IDE (Regis recently ported the Servo library to PIC32 family) and MPIDE.
I finally ported the Servo library to the 32-bit family. Works great on the #Pinguino 32MX250 but need to be tested on other 32-bit Pinguino.
Ok. project complete! It is nice and precise with good solutions.
The 3D Printer as a 2D Plotter

Anyway, if this is the turn around, maybe then a Wallace printer can be a better choice for a plotter, because it has less components. Well, it may involve more steppers...
