You can zoom in and rotate the globe with your mouse, like Google maps. Cyclone Ita looks nasty, and I know we have a few forum members up that way. That is a beauty, and in world perspective, looks so peaceful. Looking forward to the rain but not the monster that`s bringing it. Ita doesn`t seem to have a lot of rain judging by the radars, but that may change. Decided to leave the wind turbines up, probably be a crazy decision. Doubt very much the braking will handle this but has handled 60Km/hr max on a number of occasions. One of those decisions that`ll be probably regretted. Latest forecast track is not good for Cairns it seems to be altering course to a more southerly direction. We come from the land downunder. Vic |

The way I see it norcold, yeah the wind turbine may survive the storm, or it may not. But after the storm, the power might be off for hours, days or weeks, and I would really appreiciate having a working wind turbine to provide some power. Thats one reason I always shut down my wind turbine if there is the possibility of a storm. Because I'll need it later. Will be good if turbines survive, but honestly just feeling a wee lazy and said bugger it. Those cyclone chasers are crazy, but the data they get is very helpful. Last place I`d want to be is on our coast. The bloody thing is looking to track more southerly and that`s not looking good for Cairns. Our crazy need to live on the coast. Just had our first rain 0.9 mm, still spitting, light breeze, calm before the storm. Suspect communications and grid power will be first to go, perhaps that slow sat conx I have may be a blessing and allow me to stay informed. We come from the land downunder. Vic |

3mm rain so far today . 1009.1 hPa dropping .4/hr . 6.1km/hr wind from SSE. Ita tracking more south, could run along just out from coast, looking to prove very bad news. Apprehension building up, but can`t say the waiting's the worst, would be good if it was. We come from the land downunder. Vic |

Eh best luck to the guys going thru this and remember if a house that has air going under won't imlode. I have lived thru 4 cyclones and found houses that had closed lower part DID implode. The force of the wind can get so strong a house on stills can survive but a house bricked in can implode |

Ita is no fast mover, she`s only just outside Cooktown still, very compact cyclone had 7.9 mm rain , 1005.4Hpa and rising here 3.6 kmhr wind. She won`t be here til around 6PM. Radar looks promising should get good rain today. Generally they speed up once hitting land but recall Monica April 06 gave us good soaking welcome rain. Corse the winds not welcome but unfortunately for inland NQ is the only time we get good rain. Suspect this one was a wee overated, but hey PC weather modelling is only in it`s infancy, it is bloody lovely to have this early warning brought by tech sat, radar etc. Cannot bitch if we are not prepared. Still have plenty of time to drop mills, but doubt I will. Bryan interesting what you say about houses with elevated floors, At Cardwell Yasi took off the roof of a recently built govt building( and a lot of others) Part of that roof damaged one wall of an adjacent old fibro house that had an elevated floor, its roof had been renewed a few years before and was still intact. Yeah I think we got lucky. The cyclone started going through a eye wall replacement a few hours before it hit the coast, so lost a lot of its strength. If that happened earlier in the day, then the cyclone would have become more organised and a intense cat 5 as it made land fall. Plus that part of the country has some very high mountain ranges just inland from the coast, which helps to disrupt the eye. I do miss living in the tropics. Your not wrong, very lucky. Apparently also it was a very compact tall cyclone, went right up into the atmosphere more then the "average". That great divide is the reason us inlanders are somewhat complacent about these things, but way back there was a system that come in from the gulf along with one from the east, they apparently met together and wrecked inland as well. Back in the 1930`s so the folklore says. You miss living in the tropics, I recall when you left you felt getting away from these things was a plus. Which it would be but for interest sake what is it you miss most from up here? I`m biased I`ve always considered its just a local call to JC up here. I miss green! Before I headed down this way I was often told how great the climate was in the Toowoomba region, but since moving here have experienced the hottest, coldest and dryest climate of my life! So yeah, miss the climate, rain, and the green of northern QLD. I should have moved north, not south. Been to the Cairns area a few times and its the most beautiful part of Australia I've seen. You`d love today, nice lovely gentle rain all day Cairns has had 200mm up here 60mm. Ex Ita is not far to NE of us 50km approx. turned on mills, as wind to west of system is buggerall. Currently 19.4 km/hr. 999.8 Hpa dropping 0.8 /hr. Up here we are brown, 650mm/year. Guess not much dif to Toowoomba brown but not that bitter cold. Prescribe Pt. Douglas - Daintree area for you. That earth.nullschool resource is a magic piece of software. For yachties equipped with notebook and sat internet would make sailing so much easier and much safer. Check out the area SW from Perth, see why they call that the roaring forties. Certainly have it added to my favourites a must for us in cyclone areas. Note the low SE of Sydney that is drawing Ita down, she`s heading straight for it. Can see why my area is not a good wind site, but imagine offshore mills out from the SW of Western OZ. Tis handy tool with lots of potential. Wonder whether it would be possible to overlay it on moving map software like Oziexplorer, Fugawi etc. We come from the land downunder. Vic |

ITA has faded a lot now. My brother owns a holiday shack at Dingo Beach about 40 km north of Proserpine. He is currently in residence and the cyclone went right over the top of him yesterday but caused no damage except wet. Even that was only at the front side. As soon as the eye had passed it cleared up very rapidly. |

Photos from Lizard Island, seems they and Cooktown had the most structural damage, plenty of flooding especially in Ingham. Here inland we suffered buggerall and had our Tinaroo Dam filled which is a blessing. Shame it didn`t turn inland as a low and bring inland QLD rain. BOM predicted Ita`s track once she got close, spot on. That early warning makes it much safer for us. Recall back 20 years plus, we knew little until cyclones were on us. Gizmo, Have been thinking on your want of a green piece of country but away from the cyclone influenced coast. Walkamin on the Atherton Tbld might be just the place, sort of half way between the green drizzly gloomy Tolga-Atherton-Malanda and the dry brown Mareeba. Added bonus Walkamin has both a great wind resource and sunny solar conditions. Corse I`m a bit partial and believe tis only a local call to JC here on the Tabld, is why we attract Grey Nomads by the 100`s during winter. We have a celebration that is gaining momentum called "Christmas in July". Started as a sort of marketing strategy by local council to attract tourist`s along with our annual wheel-barrow race. A crazy fun 3 day race for individuals and teams from Mareeba to Chillagoe, that is starting to attract international competitors as well as those from all over OZ. We come from the land downunder. After growing up in the tropics, and spending the last few years in south QLD, I see myself eventually moving back up north. Its a hotter climate up north, but no where as harsh as it is on the Darling Downs. In the last year I've lived through the hottest and coldest days of my life! +42 and -6 degrees C. Hard to keep planted trees alive, one minute your fighting frost, the next its the hot dry wind, where no amount of watering will help. Bugger all rain. Give me the tropics anyday. Seriously though, been around Atherton, Ravenshoe, etc. Very pretty country, cool nights, good rain. The intention is to retire up that way.
