G'day Guy's,
Well this project has been off and on for a few years now and I am getting back onto it now I have a final design thought out. I'm going to make it into a 2 stroke diesel which will stress the grey matter out as this project to date doesn't have any design drawings and I'm just making it as I go.

Anyway the idea came about when I found a nice steel billet thrown in the scrap bin at work and thought a good challenge would be to make a 5 cyl air compressor and use some stacked 44 gal drums to power it. I scored a nice length of seamless pipe for the cylinder liners and they have ended up just over 100mm long. The front cover which holds the main tapered roller bearings is machined out another steel billet I had laying around.

Last night I did some research on 2 stroke diesels and thought this would be the easiest way to go but first I'll machine up a crude head and first test it as a driven compressor (crawling)

Next will be designing and making the radial cam and getting the engine going using compressed air (walking)

Next will be ripping the cylinder liners out and milling in the slots for the air inlet and machine up the new head then get the going using diesel (running)

Providing I learn to run then the goal will be making a 4wd farm buggy with tipper using that old subaru I have here for the parts. (flying)

I'm on making a pattern for casting the head. I'm also making a casting for some cooling fins for the cylinder liners which will incorporate an air chamber for the air inlet.

Anyway heres a pic from when I was roughing out the flats on the crankcase.

Next time I'm working on it I'll take some more pic's of the gear I've made and my next bit of research is trying to find some 60mm pistons that a car engine uses so spares can be easily sourced.

I worked out the capacity now with a 60mm bore and 70mm stroke using the formula R squared x pi x length x no of cylinders I came up with 989.1cc so it should have a bit of grunt.

More to come as we all get older having fun........

Cheers Bryan

That's a nice looking mill there Bryan.
The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now.
