Howdy all. First post, so please bare with me and sorry if this subject has been covered, but I couldn't find what I was after in the search engine. So here goes. A mate of mine has a water wheel (good old steam boat paddle style)which turns at 20rpm, give or take. It sits in a stream but there is not a great fall, only plenty of volume. There is a belt drive step up of 5 to 1 giving a shaft speed of 100rpm on the F&P 80 series stator. He presented the unit to me with a stator that didn't work. Test showed a no load voltage of 5volts at 200rpm. Couldn't get in to it as it was well sealed...



Re wired an 80 series stator for 2x7c.



This produces 36vdc at 100rpm unloaded. 150rpm will produce 28volts at 1amp at the output of the SunSaver10L controller. That's all he's after for his 24volt setup. My questions are what RPM is typically aimed at for a 2X7C to look after a 24volt system, and is the SS10L suitable for the F&P generator?

the basic idea is that any voltage above the batteries charging voltage and before the regulator activates (27.6 - 28.6 plus a little bit for resistance) is converted to work (amps).

if you look at the formula in the link you need a number for ohms. This is quite hard to accurately measure as most multimeters are not that accurate in this range.

if you have figures for open voltage at two rpm's and the amps output at the same revs while hooked to the battery the formula will calculate the ohms for you. Ohms is a fixed number that doesn't change, so is the revs per open voltage. Once you have these write them down so you don't forget em.

from there you can say "I want 20 amps" the formula will give the open volts needed and then the RPM/volts will give the target RPM for 20 amps output.

5:1 is close to the edge for a vbelt setup under load. Someone might have a suggestion for increasing the volts a bit.




I'm confused, no wait... maybe I'm not...

Many thanks for the link, very handy indeed. The unit is now back in service and charging, but I haven't been out to see what the output is, only informed that the batteries are being charged. There may still be improvements to be done, but it's working and he's happy with it.
