I thought the more bored 4M members might like to see what goes on when absolutely nothing is happening with the daily weather.
I can see a lot of things with data logging that I never knew existed before.

The red line is temperature and the grey one is barometric pressure, both are logged at 5 minute intervals.

First is the trend of high temperature climbing at the same rate every day in fine weather. Here the high temp has increased 4 degrees C every day, it will keep going up until a front passes through, then the build up starts again. Not easy to see this during winter but it is very obvious the rest of the year.

Second is the little night time temperature blip (red arrow). It happens on the nights that the wind drops right out and there is a perfect inversion layer and the heat from the ground stops escaping into the sky causing the rise. the spike back down again is the usual cold snap you get just before dawn.

Third thing to notice is how much the barometer (gray line) jumps around. This same pattern is repeated everyday. That big drop from noon till 5:00 PM is one of the reasons that clouds start to form in the afternoon.
I have observed that if a rain bearing front comes through in the morning, 90% of the time it's not very keen. If it is overhead in the afternoon we generally get something, even if it is just a rainbow and a sun-shower!(that's what the blue arrows are supposed to be saying)

I'm confused, no wait... maybe I'm not...

It is really informative and interesting when the meteorological data is presented in such a nicely correlating graph. Well done.

Here for comparision is graph from NQ. Not a lot of difference in range on both temp & pressure. Only dif our temp is higher but our pressure is lower, I suspect our pressures are throughout the year lower than yours. Nth Oz enjoys lows(sometimes too bloody low) whilst you fellows in Sth Oz have those big highs, just below you in the bight.
Interestingly your temp shows a steady increase whilst it is our pressure increasing. Suspect that is purely coincidental for the same period.Edited by norcold 2013-02-06

I think the big difference is the amount of water in the air and the ground this time of year, I am between 25% and 45% relative humidity, really dry, you blokes are probably struggling to get below 60%.

the best time to check the relative humidity is in the afternoon.

If the humidity is over 50% then there is enough water to act as a buffer. It will shift massive amounts of heat in and out of the atmosphere as it turns from a gas to liquid and back again.

If the humidity is low there is nothing to stop the air temperature plummeting at night and soaring during the day, apart from the heat stored in the ground.

I will post some more (yawn) slightly interesting tid-bits from the old weather station if I get a chance.

OK here it is with Humidity overlaid (yawn) ,not really, the weather is a great topic, we know we can do stuff all about it, thus(yawn)it is nearly as exciting as watching paint dry
Shows close to 100% at times as you suggested but its bloody dry where`s the rain.Edited by norcold 2013-02-07

How uninteresting.

But seriously, I need to get myself a weather station. The last one I bought was a piece of junk.

Looking at the graph for barometric pressure its easy to see how a Never Wind clock works, as they self wind the spring by barometric pressure changes, quite a genius device.
Sometimes it just works

I dug out my relative humidity calculation tables, there is a fancy name for them, I don't remember what it is.

absolute humidity in Grams of water vapour/ cubic meter of air

yahoo 4.5 - 6.0 g/m3
norcold 15.0 - 17.0 g/m3

I am going to need an infeed of moisture from somewhere and a drop in temperature to even begin to think about rain. FNQ looks ready for a dip if a front wanders past.

QWARLA's weather display live
This is where I look to find out what is happening in Townsville, weather-wise. I hope to set up something similar here when my bandwidth improves.

Don`t know about fronts, we look for troughs but best of all is those lows that turn into cyclones. Whilst they cause heaps of troubles to our coastal and southern cousins. Without the 300mm of rain from Oswald our wet would have been ziltch.
Whilst Yahoo2 you look for humidity and lower temps we look for humidity and higher temps. The higher temps being required up this way, they indicate the monsoon coming down. A stinking hot couple of days build up, than a relieving storm.
It is too bloody cool at present.29.1deg C midday.should be 40.
That Never Wind Clock powered by barometric pressure, must google it Downwind. Will do right now.

Who said the weather was uninteresting, Google that clock, make sure your sitting if your thinking of purchasing one, but!!!
Now that would be a challenge for a 4M member, to build one. Has anyone got one they`d trade for a few NQ mangoes air freighted direct.
