I was at the Highfields Pioneer Village today for their Easter show. The village is a big museum, lots of old machinery, been there a couple of times. I like to look at the way old machinery works, how our pioneers solved problems with simple levers, ratchets, gears, etc, you can learn a great deal by looking at how things were made to work before electronics made life easier. On the Easter weekend a lot of the old machinery is running, with volunteers explaining how it works. Apart from a few running steam engines, and a beautiful Ericsson Rider hot air engine running on timber as its fuel, there were a collection of working lighting plants. These were mostly 32 or 48 volt models, and a few were used to light up some of the buildings. Its good to see these old plants working again. 
This caught my eye. Its a axial flux generator. The description was only that it was used in electroplating, no other details. The magnets, 4 of, are fixed, and the stator spins. The coils are air cored, held in place with timber and a leather strap. There is a commutator, which converts the AC into DC, needed for electroplating. I thought it was interesting.
