Isaiah at Bub's again! The pictures below will show he progress on the anemometer. This pic. shows a modified vcr motor bearing housing mounted to a hard drive plate that was turned to a snug fit in the pvc cap. 
The Next picture shows the optical coupler mounting gear and bracket out of a old printer. the actual disk is in safe keeping till all else is done and ready for it. the optical disk is glued to the gear shown. 
The last shows it all together at this point. 
I have to make mounting blocks to mount the optical coupler to the hard drive disk. Then it will go to Bub for the smoke containment devices and we have to figure what we are going to use for the cup holder. '  '

This Picture is the assembled unit. yep thats over spray on the unit. '  '
This picture below shows the complete opto coupler and the sensor all installed. We are going to run a data cable down the pole a ways for the picax and radios when We get that far.This way I we won't have to climb way up to adjust the smoke orfaces etc We will try it out as a hard wire unit first and see .that the opto unit works as should and we can calibrate it in as needed. We may have to adjust the swept area of the cups if they don't calibrate . The swept area of the cups is 17 inches. I think Bub & Gizmo will have a program so we can run it on Linux. '  '

Just a short up date We have the anemometer up on a temporary pole and hard wired to a logger unit and after adjustments it seems to be coming our way. I had to make the swept area smaller to try to get better sensitivity in low wind. I got some plastic easter eggs and drilled holes in each half.I put the cups on my reloading powder scale and the fruit cup I started with is the lightest next is the short half of the easter egg then the heaviest is the long half of the easter egg. I'm working on a different hub for it also that the spokes will come out at a angle. I thing ill use the short half of the easter egg next for the cups they may be more aerodynamic than my fruit cups. At around 0 deg F. we don't do much out side. If it gets too wet for you guys down there you are welcome to come here and share the cold with us maybe even go ice fishing!! Bob M you should be able to fly over and land in my field. hehe. We have the anemometer working on hard wire but at this point where we are in the U.S. we have a lot of interference on the 434 mg radios . we may try a different frequency of radios but they cost more. The anemometer and our wind mills survived the ice and wind storm we had several weeks back. Grid power was off and some of the mills iced up but we have back up generators and got by the ice is now gone off the mills and all are turning again. We had moisture get into one of the bearings and it didn't lock it up but it did slow it down. We have new bearings in it and some fine tuning on the opto coupler. Next we have to see if we can get the 433 mg radio to work as it should. I droped the swept area of the cups down to around 7 inches and this helped also Stay tuned we haven't given up yet. Yes, I had that problem too with my own version of anemometer. The final solution (and that lasted almost 20 years so far) is to mount the thing upside down so the cups rotate below the housing. The housing is completely sealed above the downward facing shaft exit and the cable passes through a seal to the supporting arm. The wind direction vane is located above the anemometer with its vane on top. I have noticed that the new yacht masthead wind instruments are also arranged that way so I must have hit a good idea all these years ago Klaus |

Thank you for the info Klaus , I had that idea also and thats what I will do but I have to make a different mounting bracket for the cups to clear when turned upside down. we have been busy here and seem to get into to many projects.
