As I live a long way from anywhere that sells distilled h2o, I have been contemplating a basic solar still (hole in the ground covered by a plastic sheet dripping into a plastic bottle) Taking into account that I live in the tropics where heat and humidity are plentiful I think a solar still would "produce " an adequate amount of water to maintain my batteries , BUT , will this water be distilled to a level of purity good enough to use in my batteries? Any one have any experience or information that they can share? I've been through Wikipedia searching for an answer to my question but nothing is mentioned for the use of said water in batteries. Thanks to anyone who can be informative, BD.
If it can't be fixed with a hammer and chisel it's probably electrical !!

I just use demineralised water from the grocery shop. Batteries are 4 years old and going fine, no signs of ageing.

A solar still should be fine, just make sure the vessels and surfaces are clean. You can always run the distilled water through the still again to be sure.

Thanks for ur reply Gizmo, so to rerun it through the system I would pour it into a tray(s) in the hole in the ground or perhaps a separate system of say a plastic crate with a collection vessel in the crate working on the same principal as the in ground one. I imagine a black storage crate would work well. Once again , thanks for planting the seed !!. BD.

Thanks Phil23, some good reading there. Am I right in thinking that to use the distilled water for batteries there should not be any metals in the system ? presumably the VOC's given off by pvc are not detrimental to batteries as I like the idea suggested that one could open up the pvc tube to become the collector AND drip tube in one? I certinaly need a still like that as my currant model fills with water every time it rains , witch living in a tropical rain forest is often. Thanks again Phil, Rgds, BD.

I'd think aluminium for the drip tray would probably be Ok as aluminium has a tight oxide skin.

Don't think any normally makes it into the distilled water.
