Have I got this right?

If I get solar cells on my roof the local energy supplier will pay me one-for-one for the power I produce, but I get charged GST on the total amount of power used. That's the answer I received from the help desk folk at the energy supplier, but it sounds odd.

That means if I produced 50kwh from the solar cells and used 200kwh during the same period, the supplier would subtract 50kwh from my usage and charge me for the 150kwh balance, but charge me gst on the original 200kwh.

Can anyone confirm this one way or another from an electricity bill?

Thanks

James

That sounds about correct, looking at one of my bills i had $414.30 credit before GST, and a credit of $387.73 after GST included.

Although they are kind enough to not add any previous credit to the total until after the GST had been calculated for the present quater period.

In most cases very few people end up with a credit for small solar systems as the house consumes most power generated, and in this case there is no GST applied, so you are still better off because you purchased less power from the grid with GST applied.Edited by Downwind 2013-05-12
Sometimes it just works
